HAPPY BIRTHDAY DARREN MCGAVIN!

NON COMIC BOOK POST HERE — BUT HEY! I MAKE THE RULES ON THE BLOG. And I would be doing everyone a disservice if I didn’t take a moment to acknowledge the birthday of the one and only Carl Kolchak of the INS. Darren McGavin would’ve been a sprightly 103 today, had he not passed away back in 2006.

McGavin is best known — and rightfully so — for his iconic role as Carl Kolchak in the 1974 cult TV series Kolchak: The Night Stalker. But his journey with the character began even earlier, starring as Kolchak in two TV movies that predated the series: The Night Stalker (1972) and The Night Strangler (1973). These weren’t just TV movies — The Night Stalker was the highest-rated made-for-TV movie of its time, and it laid the groundwork for a new era of supernatural television. You like The X-Files? Supernatural? You owe a tip of the hat to Carl Kolchak.

McGavin’s own career had humble beginnings. After working as a painter for Columbia Pictures in 1945, he applied for a small part in the film A Song to Remember — and the rest is Hollywood history. It wasn’t until the late ’50s that McGavin really hit his stride, landing a lead role in Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer. But it was in 1972 that lightning struck when he became Kolchak — the scrappy, $2 Hat-wearing, camera-toting reporter who seemed to attract monsters like moths to a flickering desk lamp.

What makes Kolchak so memorable isn’t just the creepy creatures or spooky mysteries — it’s the man himself. He’s not a slick, muscle-bound monster hunter. He’s not suave. He’s not even particularly respected. He’s clumsy, often dismissed as a crackpot, and always underpaid. But he’s persistent, curious, and relentlessly honest. Carl Kolchak is the kind of character you can root for — a guy who’s just trying to uncover the truth, no matter how many vampires, zombies, or government conspiracies stand in his way.

So here’s to Darren McGavin — a legend who brought us one of the most unlikely, unforgettable heroes in TV history.

Happy birthday, DARREN. You’re still chasing shadows — and we’re still watching.
