HAPPY BIRTHDAY MILTON CANIFF

Today would have made Milton Caniff 119 years old! Sadly, he passed away in 1988 — but not before leaving an undeniable legacy in comic strip history.

Born in Hillsboro, Ohio in 1907, Caniff was raised in the Midwest and developed an early love for drawing and storytelling. He later attended Ohio State University, where he sharpened his artistic skills and began paving the road toward a career that would change newspaper comics forever.

Milton had a fantastic signature and a truly one-of-a-kind style — bold brushwork, deep shadows, and cinematic storytelling that leapt off the page. He is most famous for his legendary run on Terry and the Pirates, where he elevated the adventure strip into something dramatic and sophisticated, and for creating Steve Canyon, which he owned and controlled — a groundbreaking move at the time.

His influence can still be felt today in comics, illustration, and noir-inspired storytelling. A true master of ink and shadow — and a giant of the medium.
