ROUND #2: Miss
Voting is open for the Miscellaneous Bracket! But before we get to the matchups, let’s check out the results of Round 1.
Schomburg took care of business like it was a frozen park bench, knocking out one of the most underrated artists of the Golden Age, Fletcher Hanks. Alex Toth slightly edged out the King of All Ducks—it came down to just two votes! The IG poll was tied, and we had to go to the blog to see Toth move on to the next round.
It was one for the ages. Lou Fine took out Jack Cole on IG, but with Cole winning every vote on the blog, it pushed him over the edge. The same situation played out with Lee Elias and Tom Sutton. At first, it looked like a runaway for Elias, but after the final tally, Sutton secured the upset!
Will Eisner handled business against the amazing Captain Marvel artist C.C. Beck. Joe Simon upset the one and only Chester Gould. Rounding out the first round, L.B. Cole defeated Archie artist Bob Montana, and Matt Baker took care of Frank Robbins (one we’re a little sad about).
Round 2 features some great matchups:
A battle of Alexs: Schomburg vs. Toth. Schomburg, the king of Golden Age war covers, goes head-to-head with Toth, the king of design. Not only was his comic work top-notch, but his work helping develop the Hanna-Barbera cartoons was simply incredible.
Next up, one of the greatest Bronze Age horror artists, Tom Sutton, takes on Mr. Plastic Man himself, Jack Cole.
Then we’ve got Will Eisner, the father of the graphic novel, vs. Joe Simon, one half of the incredible Kirby & Simon team.
Finally, L.B. Cole—the man with more incredible pre-Code covers than almost anyone—faces Matt Baker, the king of the queens. When it comes to romance comics, no one does it like Baker.
