Journey Into Mystery #109 - VG/F, 5.0
Journey Into Mystery #109 (Oct. 1964, Marvel) — VG/FN 5.0
Thor vs. Magneto. Kirby vs. physics. A Silver Age crossover fever dream. This is the classic “When Magneto Strikes!” issue—where the Master of Magnetism steps outside the X-books to pick a fight with the God of Thunder, rope in the Brotherhood, and generally cause enough chaos to make Stan and Jack grin behind the typewriter and drawing board.
The cover is pure mid-’60s Marvel energy: Kirby dynamism, Chic Stone inks, Stan Goldberg colors, and Magneto swatting away Mjolnir like he’s redirecting a dinner plate. The whole thing reads like a preview of the Marvel Universe becoming one giant, intertwined soap opera.
Inside, you get the full 18-page Thor vs. Magneto clash aboard a submarine, cameos from the Brotherhood, statues of the Avengers and Fantastic Four at the World’s Fair, and a soft landing with Don Blake visiting Jane Foster—milk included.
Contents
Cover — “Magneto, Most Powerful of the Evil Mutants!”
Art: Jack Kirby & Chic Stone
The Brotherhood backing Magneto like a glam-rock entourage, Thor recoiling, Mjolnir thrown off course—Silver Age gold.
“When Magneto Strikes!” — 18 pages
Art: Jack Kirby & Chic Stone
Magneto tests his powers in New York, snags Thor’s attention, drags him onto a submarine, and the whole thing turns into a clash of ego, ideology, and lightning. Ends with a retreat, a chase by the X-Men, and Thor turning back into Don Blake to decompress.
“Banished from Asgard!” — 5-page Tales of Asgard backup
Art: Kirby & Vince Colletta
A small epic starring Arkin the Weak and Queen Knorda—first appearances for both.
Maj. Picto’s Grading Notes — VG/FN (5.0)
A clean mid-grade copy with strong structural integrity. Light spine wear, shallow creases, and small stress lines along the left edge. Color still pops—with that classic early-Marvel magenta-red—though there’s mild surface handling on the cover. Bottom right corner shows soft blunting. Back cover has light age toning and a small stain near the lower edge. Interior pages are off-white/cream, tight, and perfectly readable. A very solid display copy of an increasingly desirable early crossover moment.
