The Atom #19 - F-, 5.5
The Atom #19 (June–July 1965, DC) — F- 5.5
Science vs. sorcery—Silver Age style. The Atom #19 is the big “World of the Magic Atom!” issue, where Ray Palmer gets pulled straight into Zatanna’s ongoing quest for her father and ends up battling a miniature dragon in a sub-atomic realm ruled by the Druid. It’s Gardner Fox, Gil Kane, and Sid Greene operating at full 1965 energy—clean layouts, bold action, and that unmistakable Julius Schwartz blend of sci-fi logic and pure fantasy chaos.
The cover, by Gil Kane and Murphy Anderson with colors by Jack Adler and lettering by Ira Schnapp, hits you instantly: a wide-eyed sorcerer calling down a dragon from a golden chalice, Zatanna inset in full magician regalia, and the Atom charging forward mid-shrink. It’s loud, strange, and perfectly of its era—everything a mid-’60s DC cover should be.
Inside, the main story runs nearly 24 pages across three parts. Atom joins Zatanna in a hunt for Zatara, traveling through a sub-atomic dimension dominated by the Druid—his first appearance—while dodging dragons and gangsters like Biff Barker. Hawkman and Hawkgirl appear in flashback, tying the story directly to Zatanna’s earlier appearances. Rounding things out are DC’s usual Silver Age extras: a Superboy PSA, G.I. Joe and Munsters ads, a letters page (“Inside the Atom”), and a full spread of toy and cereal advertising that anchors the book firmly in 1965.

Maj. Picto’s Grading Notes — F- (5.5)
A bright, attractive mid-grade copy with solid structure. Front cover shows light spine wear, small stress ticks, and minor edge handling. Colors remain strong, with the purples and yellows still vivid. Corners show light wear. Back cover has mild toning and a small amount of surface handling. Interior pages are off-white/cream and clean throughout. A sharp, appealing example of a key early Zatanna crossover issue from the heart of the Silver Age.
