MAJOR PICTO SPOTLIGHT

Gorgo #9 packs in a full 36 pages of classic creature action, with the lead story “Return from the Deep” written by Joe Gill and illustrated by Joe Sinnott (pencils) and Vince Colletta (inks).

In this tale, Gorgo — the massive prehistoric sea creature — and his mother face off against humans intent on deploying secret Arctic atomic weapons. It’s a fun blend of monster spectacle and Cold War sci-fi vibes that feels right out of a vintage drive-in double feature.

The issue also includes shorter backup pieces:

  • “Danger on Dagor” (text feature)

  • “The Executioner” with art by Bill Molno

  • “The Greatest Mystery,” also drawn by Molno
—all adding to that classic Charlton reading experience.

The Gorgo comic series was published by Charlton Comics from the early 1960s through 1965, spanning 23 issues. It was based on the 1961 British-American monster film Gorgo — a giant prehistoric sea creature captured and brought to London, only to have his furious mother come ashore in a wave of destruction.

Unlike many film tie-in comics that stop at a single adaptation, the Gorgo series expanded the kaiju’s world with original stories pitting him and his mother Ogra against everything from military forces to alien invaders and other giant beasts.

Notably, some early issues feature art by Steve Ditko
